Barney Rosset, founder, and editor-in-chief of the publication Evergreen Review was married to Mitchell, a well-known printmaker. The pair made their entrance down the aisle at a small wedding in 1949 in Paris.

During the early days of their relationship, Rosset accompanied Joan to New York where she introduced Barney to her acquaintances who were abstract expressionists. They then moved to France and got married there.
