How did Joey Heatherton start her Professional Career?

As a young actor, Heatherton began her professional life and career. Her first television appearance was on her father’s program, The Merry Mailman, a well-liked kids program in New York.

She joined the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music at the age of 15 as an ensemble member and understudy, and the following year, as a semi-regular on The Perry Como Show (later renamed Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall), where she played an ecstatic teen with a lifelong crush on Perry Como, she received her first sustained national exposure.

That same year, Heatherton also released her debut song, “That’s How It Goes”/”I’ll Be Seeing You,” but it didn’t do well on the charts.

The same was true for her next three singles. She played an affluent, pampered adolescent in a 1960 episode of Route 66, which was her first dramatic television performance. In the early 1960s, Heatherton was widely used as a troubled adolescent due to her “sexy-kid look.”

In the middle of the 1960s, Heatherton became well-known for her passionate dance on television, which some viewers found revolting and some commentators characterized as “sleazy eroticism.”

On The Tonight Show in 1964, she made an appearance and showed Johnny Carson how to dance “The Frug.” She participated in several additional episodes of the program and had “Hullabaloo,” a song she’d sung on the program, released on Coral Records.

From June through September 1968, Heatherton co-hosted Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers with Frank Sinatra, Jr., a summertime replacement musical comedy hour. She also made appearances on several other television variety series in the 1960s, such as This Is Tom Jones, The Andy Williams Show, The Hollywood Palace, and The Ed Sullivan Show.

Additionally, Heatherton made appearances in the 1963 movies Twilight of Honor, Where Love Has Gone, and My Blood Runs Cold.[12] She portrayed the young wife of a murder suspect (Oscar nominee Nick Adams) in Twilight of Honor.

The sole color movie was Where Love Has Gone from 1964, a high-profile melodrama based on Harold Robbins’ novel about the notorious Lana Turner-Cheryl Crane-Johnny Stompanato manslaughter case. Heatherton played the Turner character’s daughter, Susan Hayward, in the movie.
