He debuted in the Minor Leagues in 1967, when he was 19 years old. In his rookie year, he recorded 70 helpers. After a while, in August of 1967, he was summoned up to the major leagues. In his first full season as a Major Leaguer, he caught 154 games, demonstrating his defensive prowess. On the squad, he finished third.

After two seasons of leading the league in home runs, RBIs, and sacrifice flies while simultaneously catching more than 100 games, he was named the league’s MVP, joining Roy Campanella as the only catcher to earn repeated MVP honors.
