With a majority of the vote (26%) in 2017, Keisha Lance Bottoms was chosen as mayor. It consequently found itself competing against several other candidates on Election Day. She is only the second African American woman and sixth African American mayor. Keisha Lance Bottoms willingly refunded $25,700 in campaign donations from PRAD Group in October 2017 as a result.

Bottoms affirmed the continuation of the LGBTQ advisory board’s leadership and named Malik Brown as the city’s first director of LGBTQ Affairs in December 2020.
Bottoms criticized Georgia Governor Brian Kemp for declaring that businesses in Georgia would reopen in April 2020, saying that the COVID-19 pandemic was still in its early stages at the time.
After George Floyd was killed, riots broke out in Atlanta. Bottoms denounced those guilty but subsequently encouraged demonstrators by declaring, “There is something better on the other side of this.”
As a result, on July 15, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed an order suspending all regional mask requirements. He brought legal action against Bottoms in Superior Court on July 16. He then tries to invalidate her order and stop her from talking about it.
For instance, Savannah and Athens chose not to bring legal action against other cities that had mask requirements. The hearing was postponed on July 21 after the court announced her disqualification. In a similar vein, she declared that she would not seek reelection as Atlanta’s mayor in May 2021.
In June 2019, she supported Joe Biden in the Democratic Party’s presidential primary. He stated during a CNN discussion in March 2020 that he will choose a female running partner. She was therefore one of his top four options, according to a June CNN article.
On August 11, 2020, Harris was formally introduced as Biden’s running partner. She was chosen to serve as the DNC’s permanent co-chair in 2020.
