After George Floyd was killed, riots broke out in Atlanta. Bottoms denounced those guilty but subsequently encouraged demonstrators by declaring, “There is something better on the other side of this.”

As a result, on July 15, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed an order suspending all regional mask requirements. He brought legal action against Bottoms in Superior Court on July 16. He then tries to invalidate her order and stop her from talking about it.
