In the third round of the amateur draft in 1984, Ken Caminiti was chosen by the Houston Astros. He debuted in professional baseball in 1985 with the Single-A Osceola Astros of the Florida State League.
After that, he continued to play for an additional 15 seasons. He also played third base for Puerto Rico’s Indios de Mayagüez in the Puerto Rico Winter League.
He made his major league debut with the Houston Astros in July 1987. Similar to this, he went back to the minor levels in 1988, signing up with the Triple-A Tucson Toros of the Pacific Coast League. He had numerous injuries while playing for Houston, but he hit 18 home runs that year, earning him a spot in his first All-Star Game.
