How did Latrell Sprewell start his Professional Career?

From 1988 to 1990, Sprewell played competitive basketball in Poplar Bluff with the Three Rivers Community College Raiders and from 1990 to 1992 with the University of Alabama.

Later, he played alongside future NBA players Jason Caffey, James Robinson, Robert Horry, and Marcus Webb. Sprewell was selected by the Golden State Warriors as the 24th overall selection in the 1992 NBA Draft.

In addition, from 1993 to 1994, under the stewardship of Sprewell and NBA Rookie of the Year power forward Chris Webber, he led the league in games played and minutes played for the Warriors.

On December 1, 1997, Sprewell’s assault on Warriors head coach P. J. Carlesimo during a practice in Oakland left an indelible mark on his resume.

Carlesimo Sprewell threatened to kill him and dragged him backward by the throat until his colleagues and assistant coaches removed him from the situation.

After cleansing and dressing, Carlesimo Sprewell returned approximately 20 minutes later to confront him again. He briefly struck Carlesimo’s right cheek before the other trainers again drew him away.

Sprewell was also granted a 10-game suspension without pay. The following day, in response to public outrage, the Warriors voided the remaining three years and $23.7 million of his contract.

Sprewell was accused of reckless driving for his role in a 90 mph collision in which two people were injured. In accordance with his no-contest plea, he was confined under house arrest for three months.

More on Profession

Due to the NBA impasse, Sprewell did not return to the court until February 1999, when the Warriors traded him to the New York Knicks in exchange for Chris Mills, John Starks, and Terry Cummings.

That season, Sprewell appeared in 37 games for the Knicks, starting in all but four of them from the bench.

The 1999–2000 Knicks’ 50–32 record with Sprewell, Ewing, and shooting guard Allan Houston in the starting lineup earned them the third seed in the Eastern Conference. Per contest, Sprewell averaged 18.6 points.

In 2000–01, after Ewing was traded to the Seattle Super Sonics, Sprewell became the Knicks’ leader, scoring 17.7 points and earning his lone All-Star selection.

Sprewell reported to training camp for the 2002–03 season with a fractured wrist. In addition, the Knicks fined him a record $250,000 for neglecting to report the incident following his claim that he slipped on his yacht.

Career achievements

During the 2003–04 season, Sprewell joined superstar power forward Kevin Garnett and point guard Sam Cassell to form the league’s highest-scoring triumvirate.

The Minnesota Timberwolves offered Sprewell a three-year, $21 million contract extension and salary reduction on October 31, 2004.

In addition, Sprewell’s agent, Bob Gist, stated that his client would rather retire than play for the NBA minimum salary and without a contract one month into the 2005–06 season.

In March 2006, Sprewell signed contracts with the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, who were both heavy contenders to win the NBA Championship at the time.

Sprewell did not respond either, and he remained unsigned by the end of the season. At the outset of that season, the Los Angeles Lakers expressed interest in him, but nothing came of it.
