How did Mark Schlereth start his Professional Career?

Mark accepted a scholarship offer from head coach Dennis Erickson at the University of Idaho. Following Erickson’s departure in 1985, Mark joined the Vandals’ offensive line under new head coach Keith Gilbertson, where he blocked for quarterbacks Scott Linehan and John Friesz.

During his senior year in 1988, the Vandals advanced to the national semifinals, and he was awarded second-team all-Big Sky. In 2005, he was inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame. Mark was inducted into the University of Idaho’s Vandal Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

Mark was chosen by the Washington Redskins in the tenth round (#263 overall) of the 1989 NFL draft. He has played in 12 NFL seasons, six of which he spent with the Denver Broncos (1995-2000). Mark was a member of one Super Bowl-winning team with the Washington Redskins and two Super Bowl-winning teams with the Denver Broncos.

Following that, he was chosen to the Pro Bowl for his performances in 1991 and 1998. His former Redskins colleagues refer to him as “Stink” in reference to stink heads, an Eskimo delicacy made from rotting fish heads.

Mark helped the Broncos upset the Green Bay Packers 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII on January 25, 1998, which also happened to be his 32nd birthday. During his playing career, Mark was injured frequently and had 29 surgeries.

15 surgeries were performed on his left knee, while 5 procedures were performed on his right knee. All of Mark’s injuries were documented on the sports medicine television show Athlete 360, which was hosted by Dr. Mark Adickes, a former Redskins teammate.

He was honored into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Alaska High School Hall of Fame in 2008.
