In his youth career, Matt led Blue Valley West to the state championship. For his team, he scored 23 goals and assisted on 19 others. Matt rose to prominence through his participation in college-level soccer. He later signed with the Kansas City Wizards, where he made his debut in March 2009.

Matt scored his first goal against the Chicago Fire on March 26, 2011. Matt was courted by Southampton and Birmingham City, but he chose to remain with Kansas City. In a friendly match against Canada on January 29, 2013, he made his senior debut.

He was also a member of the team that defeated Germany 4-3 in an International Friendly. Matt was named to the 23-man FIFA World Cup roster and will play in all group matches.
