He started working as a coach at Virginia Military Institute in 1995. He spent two years at Arkansas State University teaching their defensive backs after being hired due to his exceptional ability. Due to his exceptional teaching abilities, the University of Cincinnati later hired him.

He remained there for a while before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him as their coach. After so many years of arduous labor, the Vikings’ head coach, Brad Childress, appointed him defensive coordinator in 2006.

Later, he was chosen to attend an interview for the vacant position of head coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who won the 2005 Super Bowl. Bill Cowher, who had led the team for more than 15 years, was replaced by him.

He also agreed to a three-year contract extension with the business and was appointed the 16th Head Coach of the group. He defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 24-17 in November 2011 to win his 50th game as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In October 2017, he was named the third NFL coach in history to finish with a better record in his first ten seasons with a single outstanding team.
