Nate Ruess began his career in 2000 when he formed The Format with his best friend and popular artist Sam Means. On August 9, 2002, The Format released EP, a five-song EP that helped them attain local recognition. As a result of this, Elektra Records signed them in 2002.

Their popularity grew with the release of their debut album, “Interventions + Lullabies,” in 2003. They published their second EP, “Snails,” on Atlantic Records in 2005.

They released their second album, “Dog Problems,” on July 10, 2006, on their own record label, The Vanity Label. However, the group disbanded in 2008. After The Format disbanded, he created the band Fun. Nate, Jack Antonoff, and Andrew Dost formed Fun.
