Payton was detained and charged with first-degree murder after being apprehended. Gendron entered a not-guilty plea to the killings on May 19, 2022. However, the 18-year-old entered a guilty plea to all counts on November 28, 2022.

The shooting was accused of being a hate crime, domestic terrorism, and murder. Payton was given 11 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of release on February 15, 2023. Still pending is the federal accusation.

Paul is a New Jersey native who was raised in Old Bridge. In his birthplace of Madison, Wisconsin, he earned his high school diploma in 1988. He continued his schooling at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where he earned an engineering degree in 1993. Paul has worked as a Professional Engineer 1 at the New York State Department of Transportation ever since he graduated from college.

Susquehanna Valley High School served as his high school, and he was enrolled in an engineering degree at SUNY Broome Community College in Binghamton.

His acquaintances claimed that he displayed a variety of peculiar behaviors, such as often skipping in-person lessons and dressing in a hazmat suit to school. The 10 victims of the shooting, who ranged in age from 32 to 86, were all Black. Two White and one Black  individual were harmed.

According to reports, Payton created a 180-page book where he discussed racial nationalism and mass immigration. On May 12, two days prior to the attack, he had already released the manifesto on Google Docs.
