In 1950, Sidney Poitier wed Juanita Hardy for the first time. After Poitier’s involvement with actress Diahann Carroll, the marriage broke up in 1965. After that, he wed Canadian actress Joanna Shimkus, with whom he stayed married up until his passing.
Four of his six children were born to his first wife, and the other two were born to his second wife. He had great-grandchildren and grandchildren as well. At the age of 94, Poitier passed away at his home in Los Angeles on January 6, 2022.

11th World War veteran Sidney Poitier enlisted in the military. He pretended to be mentally sick to get fired from the Army. After leaving the service, he went back to working as a dishwasher until landing his first acting role in an American NEGRO Theatre production. Additionally, he attracted a lot of interest, which ultimately assisted him in landing more projects, because of his debut film, “No Way Out.”
Some of his best works are Shoot to Kill, The Defiant Ones, Lilies of the Field, Stir Crazy, In the Heat of the Night, and Porgy and Bess. A Piece of Action, A Nice December, and Ghost Dad are just a few of the movies he has directed. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Walt Disney Company.
In 1963, Sidney became the first black man to ever win an Oscar, making history. He was given the honor for his performance in “Lilies of the Field.”
Despite these honors, Poitier expressed concerns about being viewed as a “token” in Hollywood, and he remained the only important black actor in the business at the time. As a result, he received numerous jobs that were very similar. Due to these concerns, Sidney temporarily resigned from the film industry.
