Haslem received an athletic scholarship from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. He played for the Gators squad and majored in leisure involvement from 1998 to 2002. Haslem was unable to be picked in the 2002 NBA draft due to his height of 6’6″.

The Atlanta Hawks then offered him a slot in their training camp, and Shaw’s Pro Summer League made him their roaster. At the beginning of the NBA season in 2002–2003, the Hawks waived Haslem.
