He started his professional career in 1996 when he joined Olimpia de Venado Tuerto in the Argentine League. He joined the Argentine team Atenas Cordoba in 2000, and it was there that he won the MVP award for the Argentine League Finals in 2002. Before joining Unicaja Málaga, he competed with Baloncesto Fuenlabrada in the Spanish ACB League in 2002–2003.

Walter agreed to a four-year, €5.05 million contract with Saski Baskonia, but left the team soon after to join the NBA. He signed a $1.8 million, one-year contract with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006.
