Authorities ordered undercover agent Lizzie James to pose as a girlfriend for Colin to coax a confession once they were confident they had found their man.
Lizzie tried her hardest to get Colin to confess, but he resisted. Police still accused him of murder, but the judge dismissed the case after only four days of testimony, calling the scheme “deceptive conduct of the grossest sort.” The operation was the focus of the Channel 4 documentary Deceit.

Colin spent his £706,000 settlement and is now employed by Tesco. Authorities may have felt added pressure to find the killer of Rachel because of how gruesome the crime was. But that doesn’t justify their efforts to get him to confess.
Nothing I can do will persuade those folks who believe I was involved in the murder from their beliefs, Colin mourned.
“I started to live with a fortress mentality because I got so used to people approaching me and shouting “nonce” at me,” the author said.
A DNA discovery in 2008 identified Robert Napper as the real murderer. Robert was charged with the death of three people as well as the rape and sexual assault of 70 women. A judge gave him a life sentence for his actions in 1995.
The judge informed Napper, “You are on any view an extremely dangerous individual. During Rachel’s murder and the subsequent inquiry into it, Colin and Napper bore a startling likeness.
But there are still many people who need to apologize. I have been severely mistreated. Stagg claimed £1 million in damages in his lawsuit against the police, but the judge only gave him £706,000. The authorities expressed regret for how they had handled Colin.
Stagg didn’t waste much time spending his money.
In 2021, Colin works as a warehouseman and a cashier at Tesco Express. He lives in southeast England with his wife and her four adult children. Colin has pardoned the police for attempting to implicate him in Rachel’s homicide.
Even though Colin Stagg leads a somewhat anonymous life, occasionally a client recognizes him. A buddy told The Daily Mail that “sometimes consumers recognize him and are baffled as to where they have seen him.”

Lizzie James wrote to Colin and expressed interest in his sexual aspirations. Colin responded despite being wary of James’ motives, beginning a five-month-long conversation.
After a few months, a dissatisfied Lizzie acknowledged that she had her finest sex after participating in a satanic murder. This futile attempt to get Colin to confess backfired because a disgusted Stagg insisted that every life was precious.
Stagg made up a murder in a forest because he feared losing Lizzie. Finally, Lizzie gave a warning: confess or I’m out of here. If only you had murdered on Wimbledon Common, Lizzie said. It would have been fine if you had killed her.
Colin Stagg responded,
“I’m sorry, but I haven’t. When the judge refused to accept the evidence from Lizzie’s operation, the police eventually charged Stagg with a crime that had egregiously insufficient proof, and the case was prematurely dismissed.
Given that the Met Police used his lack of sexual experience and emotional sensitivity to trap him, Stagg’s forgiveness of them is admirable.
