Dominic Perrottet is the 46th Premier of New South Wales following Gladys Berejiklian’s shock resignation. Perrottet, a former lawyer, joined political circles in 2010, gradually establishing himself as a vocal conservative-leaning Liberal. He replaced Gladys in a landslide and is the youngest person to hold his current position at age 39.
Not everyone in the Liberal Party has been thrilled with Perrottet’s ascension. Similar to his 2016 support of President Donald Trump, his hardline ideas, such as his anti-abortion position and attack on gender-neutral language, have sparked controversy.
The father of six pledged to be both an “infrastructure Premier” and a “family Premier” in his first speech in front of the public. Twelve children were reared by Perrottet’s parents, who encouraged them to express their opinions early on.

Dominic Perrottet was born on September 21, 1982, to parents John and Anne Maria Perrottet in West Pennant Hills, New South Wales, Australia. Dominic was the youngest of three kids at the time.
Ten more children would be born to John and Anne Maria, but one of them would not survive. Dominic grew raised with five sisters and seven brothers.
John described Dominic as a “boisterous boy” with a “brain that goes at a thousand miles an hour” in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald. When he was three or four years old, things would move so quickly that John could hardly keep up with them.
Dominic parents raised twelve kids and encouraged them
He had to be somewhat calmed down, but that was necessary because of his highly creative mind.
Dominic’s parents encouraged their kids to engage in discussion and express their opinions. Each child was required to bring a newspaper clipping to supper every day and share their thoughts about it. Politics and sports were both acceptable topics for the kids to discuss.
They had to listen carefully, be open to hearing what the other person had to say, and refrain from speaking inappropriately, John said. Dominic claims that the family dinners aided in the development of respect for other people’s viewpoints in him and his siblings:
“Growing up in an environment where you are debating each other fostered in our family; the best way to beat people is debating through humor and not to take yourself too seriously. Yes, express your passionate opinions, but do so with respect for those of others. Such robust discussions make you a critical thinker.”
A whiteboard was necessary for Anne Maria and John to keep track of the children. Despite the parents’ best efforts, they occasionally lost at least one child. “There were times when we took off on holiday and realized we’d left a kid somewhere,” John wrote.
Dominic Perrottet credits his dad for instilling in him family values
Dominic and his father bonded through their love for running. The family’s participation in marathons brought out the kids’ competitive sides. John wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald about Dominic’s refusal to lose to his younger brother despite ailing from a stomach bug:
“[Dominic] started throwing up on the side of the road, only to see his brother Gabriel, who’s half his age, go bolting past. He thought, ‘I can’t live with this!’ So Dom composed himself, took off, and caught up with Gabe. He was never going to be beaten by his younger brother.”
John’s bond with Dominic transcends their love for running. Dominic viewed John as an example when he felt ready to start a family. Before he proposed to his wife Helen, Dominic passed by his father’s office for advice.
Dominic is a father of six, and as he raises his kids, he refers to the values his father instilled in him growing up. He concluded:
“What I learned from Dad is that time is precious when you’re at home. It’s challenging to balance work and family life and make sure that when you’re home, you’re home, not somewhere else. It’s something he’s instilled in me: you get your happiness and joy in life from your family. Dad’s demonstrated that in spades.”
