Eric Carle’s personal life includes his marriage to Barbara Morrison from 1973 till her death in 2015. She was his second wife, and he had two children from his first marriage.

In 2002, he and Barbara founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Northampton, Massachusetts, but he currently splits his time between Florida and North Carolina.

In 1952, he moved to New York City with barely $40 and began working as a graphic designer for “The New York Times.” During the Korean War, he joined the US Army but worked as a mail clerk in Germany.

He returned to the same position after being discharged until he was employed as the art director by an advertising agency, which was much more to his liking.

Eric’s illustrious career began in the 1960s when he was discovered by author Bill Martin Jr., who hired him to work on the children’s picture book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” which was released in 1967 and became a best-seller.

Since then, his career, net worth, and popularity have all increased. He began to write and illustrate his own stories, and his first book, “1, 2, 3 To The Zoo,” was released the following year, and his second picture book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” was published in 1969, which marked the beginning of his entire career by earning huge success.

The book sold over 38 million copies worldwide and was translated into over 50 languages, earning him honors such as the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award in 1970, the Nakamori Reader’s Prize in Japan in 1975, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 2003, among others.

To further his works, Eric has authored and illustrated over 70 books, including “The Grouchy Ladybug” (1977), “The Very Lonely Firefly” (1995), “The Very Clumsy Click Beetle” (1999), and “The Rabbit And The Turtle” (2008), all of which have contributed significantly to his net worth.

Most recently, in 2015, he illustrated “The Nonsense Show.” Eric has received numerous awards and honorary degrees, including those from Appalachian State University in 2013 and Williams College in 2016. The Society of Illustrators also honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
