Freddie Freeman ecstatic embrace with his father, Fred, is one of the iconic pictures of the Atlanta Braves World Series victory. Three generations of the Freeman family from Freddie’s father to his son celebrated together after Freddie hit the home run that ended the Houston Astros’ season. Rosemary Freeman, his mother, rejoiced in heaven.
In an interview with The New York Times, Freddie said, “Believe me, I wish I could have hugged my mom on that field. But I’m aware that she’s bouncing around with my grandmother right now. Freddie’s wife, Chelsea, texted him two hours before the Braves victory to express her pride in his work. There is no question that Rosemary is happy.

After witnessing Freddie hit his first home run, Rosemary exclaimed,
“We have a home run hitter!” to her husband Fred.
Sadly, Rosemary would miss seeing her son play at the highest level of baseball competition. Each time Freddie tells Rosemary’s story, he finds himself unable to control his tears.
Rosemary experienced appendicitis five years following a procedure to remove a bleeding mole. The worst was confirmed by scans: cancer had returned.
Soon after, hospice care took the place of Rosemary’s hospitalization. Every day, Freddie and his two brothers hurried to console their mother. Freeman admitted to ESPN that having three sons share her bed was hard for her mother, but she still did it. Freddie elucidated:
“Those tiny moments are the most precious to me.” She was in excruciating pain—a 20 out of 10—and she remained silent the entire time. Even though she had to lay there, she attempted to be as kind to us as she could by letting us crawl into bed. Even in those days, she was more than that—a mom.
Freddie believed his mother would defeat the illness, and he admits that she made every effort to do so. In June 2000, he was summoned to the principal’s office and realized she had died. He stated, “I was 10.” “I was gullible. I was still optimistic that my mother would survive.
Freeman saved his father’s life by rushing him to the hospital after he lost his breath. After Rosemary passed away, Freddie gave up baseball for a while because he just wanted to be at home. I mean, as a 10-year-old, I don’t even know how you digest it, he added. Freddie and his brothers grew closer to their father during that period.
My dad had to be Super Dad through it, and he succeeded. Freddie recommended to Fred that they play baseball after some time. He revealed to ESPN that the activity evolved into therapy:
“You recognized that it did, in fact, divert your attention from something for a short while. And those quick games of catch evolved into extended sessions of batting practice and other activities designed to distract us from our problems. It served as our psychological cure to get us through.
When his father started to lose breath, Freddie rushed him to the hospital, saving his life.
After Rosemary died, Freddie and his brothers had Fred to rely on, but he didn’t have much help. As he attempted to assume the roles of two parents, he fell into sadness. His health deteriorated and he gained weight.
One night, Fred saw his father having trouble breathing while he and Freddie watched the Lakers play. He begged his father to see a doctor right away out of concern. In the end, Fred arrived at the doctor’s office just in time. Freddie explained to ESPN Daily:
“I was just sitting there, staying at the hospital where my mother had been two years earlier. I’m in the room with my father when the doctor enters and says, “Mr. Freeman, you’re lucky you came to the hospital tonight.” Since you would have most likely passed away in your sleep if you hadn’t entered and instead went to bed. When I was 12 years old, I was almost without my parents.
Congestive heart failure resulted from Fred’s heart becoming engorged with fluid. Fred’s kids pleaded with him to look after himself properly, so he did.
He also gave up his position as a certified public accountant so that he and his sons could play baseball. Without his father’s guidance, according to Freddie, he wouldn’t be the player he is today. He said to ESPN:
I usually tell him that without him, I wouldn’t be here. And that really is true. He always says things like, “No, you have talent,” etc. But it makes me upset to think of what he went through when I was 10 and my brothers were 13 and 16 years old.

Freddie Played Internationally for Canada in Honor of his Mother
To remember his mother, who passed away from skin cancer, Freddie constantly dons long sleeves. He also sports a locket that contains her hair. He took things a step further a few years ago by moving his playing allegiance to Canada.
Canadian parents Fred and Rosemary brought up their kids in Southern California. They got engaged in Oshawa a few years after they first met in Windsor, Canada. Rosemary never gave up her Canadian citizenship.
When the Braves played the Blue Jays in Toronto in 2015, Freddie first mentioned his desire to represent his country. Freeman disclosed to ESPN his plans to skulk off and visit a building where Rosemary frequently spent time.
Freddie Freeman remarked,
“I’m going to wander around and look at the high-rise where she worked.”
“That’s great for me. It will be unique to witness that. In order to stand in for my mother, I want to represent Canada.”
Although Canada already had two strong basemen in Joey Votto and Justin Morneau, he would have preferred to accomplish it in 2015. The chance came up in 2017, with Justin listed as the designated hitter and Votto out with an injury.
Freddie Freeman told mlb.com that although he hadn’t anticipated the opportunity to arise so quickly, he would take full advantage of it.
It makes it even more amazing for him to be able to wear a Canada uniform with his father watching from the stands, he said, knowing what it means to the entire family.

“When it comes to this, I’m not acting. The best thing you can do, in my opinion, is anything you can to honor your family. My mother is the reason for this, and course, winning would make it even more special. I’m hoping I can control my feelings and play well.
Freddie called his Dad for Support whenever he Started to Struggle
Freddie Freeman was a senior at El Modena High School and a fresh-faced 17-year-old when he was signed by the Atlanta Braves. Since Freddie was unable to create a legally binding contract, Fred signed the agreement.
The gifted youngster could occasionally find the Gulf Coast League to be too difficult. He called Fred for support, and the doting dad responded by flying to Orlando for support.
Triple-A wasn’t any easier than the Gulf Coast League; Freddie almost quit baseball due to his poor performances.
“He [Freddie] said, ‘Dad, I made a mistake, I need to come home, I’m not good enough,’” Fred told The New York Times.
Freddie Freeman responded by flying to Charlotte to watch Freddie perform. It turned out that all Freddie needed was someone to take the pressure off his shoulders. Fred continued:
“I said, ‘Freddie, they’re bouncing up there. Tomorrow, don’t swing. You can’t do any worse.’ So he walked the first times on eight pitches, and then the third time up he hit one off the center field fence on the first pitch.”
