He also succeeded in bringing home the team gold in 1964, 1968 (both on Dux), 1976 (riding Mehmed), 1984, and 1988 (both with Ahlerich), along with the individual gold in 1984 on Ahlerich. In the individual competition, he further won two bronze medals in 1968 and 1976.
Even better, he took home six gold medals at the World Championships—two for individuals and four for teams. He won the individual crown at the European Championships in 1967, 1973, and 1985. He even got the chance to ride on seven successful West German teams in the years 1965, 1973, 1983, 1985, and other years as well.
Early in his career, he also had the chance to compete in eventing. Additionally, he took part in the three-day competition for the West German team that won the 1959 European Championships. He also managed to finish 18th in the individual competition at the 1960 Summer Olympics.
