Ama Ata is a poet, dramatist, novelist, and scholar from Ghana who made significant contributions to African literature and women’s emancipation.
She held the position of Secretary for Education in Jerry Rawlings’ PNDC administration of Ghana from 1982 to 1983.
With her play “The Dilemma of a Ghost,” she broke through boundaries and paved the road for other African women authors to become the first published African woman playwright in 1965.
In 2000, she established the Mbaasem Foundation in Accra to assist and promote the writings of African women.
Aidoo received various honors. A 1992 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book (Africa) was given to her for the book “Changes.”
“Essays in Honor of Ama Ata Aidoo at 70” was published in 2012 and honored her efforts. Additionally, Yaba Badoe’s 2014 documentary “The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo” provided light on her life and influence.

Ama, a renowned playwright and author, died on May 31, 2023, at the age of 81. She is recognized for her literary achievements.
On March 23, 1942, she was born in Abeadzi Kyiakor, a small town near Saltpond, Gold Coast (now Ghana).
Her bereaved family publicly announced her demise. She reportedly passed away as a result of a brief illness that harmed her health.
Her family broke the news in a moving press release, expressing their tremendous sadness yet clinging to the prospect of a resurrection. On that dreadful Wednesday morning, they announced to the public that Aidoo had died at a young age.
The family’s leader, Kwamena Essandoh Aidoo, stated that the specifics of the funeral plans will be disclosed later. The family politely asked for privacy while enduring this trying time of loss.
Due to how profound and thought-provoking the author’s work was, it has left a hole in African literature.
Her family has chosen to keep the specifics of her disease a secret, but her remarkable literary journey will continue to serve as an example for future generations.

When Ghana holds elections, Kinna assumes the helm of Ghana Decides, a nonpartisan organization that makes use of online social media technologies to encourage an informed electorate, making her enthusiasm and skill particularly clear during such years.
She fervently believes in social media’s ability to advance and promote literary arts.
She is also well known for her literary blog, Kinna Reads, which has developed into a significant online forum for talking about African literature.
The Africa Reading Challenge, an online literacy initiative encouraging people to read and debate African literature for a year, was started by her in 2012.

Her early years were spent in a Fante royal family. She was the daughter of Maame Abasema and Nana Yaw Fama, the revered chief of Abeadzi Kyiakor. She was born and raised in a nation where British neocolonialism was once again active.
