The F/A-18 Super Hornet pilot is now based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, and assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106.
Lt. Lee is one of six officers selected, per the social media post, to join the illustrious team for the 2023 air performances. Even though females have worked for the prestigious Blue Angels for more than 55 years in a variety of capacities, this will be the first time since the club’s inception in 1946 that the air show team will be led by a female pilot.
What You Should Know About Amanda Lee
Mounds View, Minnesota, is where Amanda Lee was born. She attended the University of Minnesota and decided to enlist in the Navy following graduation.
She enrolled in and completed Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes in 2007, according to the US Navy, after which she began working as an aircraft electronics technician. After being selected to take part in the Seaman-to-Admiral Commissioning Program, she obtained her commission in 2013.
She earned a biochemistry degree from Old Dominion University in the same year. In April 2016, Amanda Lee enlisted in the US Navy as a naval aviator. Amanda Lee was one of nine pilots that took part in a women’s-only flyover in honor of the late Captain Rosemary Bryant Mariner after her passing in 2019.
According to the New York Post, Amanda Lee praised Mariner for her service to the Navy so that future generations wouldn’t hear the phrase “equal chances” in our vocabulary.
Before Lee, Marine Major Katie Higgins became the Blue Angels’ first female pilot when she joined the unit in 2015. She operated the C-130 Hercules cargo jet, also referred to as Fat Albert, from 2014 until 2016. As the squadron represents US Naval Aviation, being selected to fly with the Blue Angels is a huge honor.
The goal of the Blue Angels is to use flying displays and community involvement to show the Navy and Marine Corps competency and collaboration.
On July 18, 2022, five new squadron members were announced, including Lt. Lee. A few of the others are LCDR Thomas Zimmerman, LCDR Brian Vaught, Capt. Samuel Petko, LCDR Greg Jones, and Lt. Philippe Warren. In September 2022, the newest recruits will begin a two-month assignment with the squadron.
After the 2022 air performance, which will end in November, the newly hired troops will undergo a five-month rigorous training program at the Naval Air Facility in California and NAS Pensacola.
