After studying improv at Chicago’s Second City and ImprovOlympic, Poehler co-founded the improv comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade in the early 1990s. In 1996, the trio relocated to New York City, and in 1998, Comedy Central aired their performance as a half-hour sketch comedy series.
Poehler and fellow Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre members co-founded the group.

Poehler married Canadian actor Will Arnett on August 29, 2003. He initially met her after seeing one of her concerts in 1996.
