Amy Schumer Is Receiving Criticism For Her Joke On Alec Baldwin’s Film Rust

Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer recently got into a controversy after making a joke about the Rust movie shooting incident involving Alec Baldwin. The comedian debuted at the Mirage Theater in Las Vegas on April 2 for her first stand-up comedy performance since the 2022 Academy Awards.

During the performance, Schumer discussed a series of gags that she was not permitted to say at the 94th Academy Awards. Alec Baldwin’s terrible shooting on the set of Rust, which killed cinematographer Halyn Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, was the subject of one such joke.

Even though Schumer’s comedy gig was intended to be phone-free and audiences were asked not to record the show, the shotgun joke made its way to social media and sparked an uproar.

An examination of Amy Schumer’s controversial Alec Baldwin joke

Amy Schumer’s April 2 Las Vegas stand-up performance opened with a discussion about Will Smith and Chris Rock’s Oscars 2022 slapping incident. As said by the comedian:

“I am speechless when it comes to the Oscars.” I honestly have no idea what to say. I will refrain from making jokes about it. Will Smith punched Chris Rock, regardless of whether you were present or not. Did you see it in your news feed?

The Life & Beth actress then compared Smith to Muhammad Ali (a reference to his role in the 2001 biopic) and stated that Smith’s assault on Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head was an example of “toxic masculinity”

“I was kind of feeling myself… Ali appeared to be ascending the steps abruptly. And it was a f***ing disappointment. The only thing I can say is that it was incredibly sad, and I feel it tells much about toxic masculinity.”

Schumer then stated that the best way to obtain “relief” from the Oscars fiasco would be to tell the jokes she was not allowed to do on stage during the Oscars:

“I believe the greatest way to soothe us would be for me to tell the Oscar jokes that I was not permitted to do on television.”

Before reciting the jokes, the comedian warned the audience not to be disappointed and pleaded with them not to share the content with others.

“My attorney warned me not to make these Oscar jokes,” I’d like to begin by saying. Please do not tell anyone and do not become angry with me.”

Schumer made a joke about the gunshot incident involving Alec Baldwin in Rust:

“Is ‘Don’t Look Up’ the name of a movie?” Avoid looking down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s shotgun. You can easily walk up to someone and [slap] them.”

Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his new film, Rust, on October 21, 2021, after misfiring an alleged fake pistol while practicing a shooting scene.

In addition to Alec Baldwin, Schumer stated that Joe Rogan and James Franco were among the Oscars jokes she was prohibited from saying.

Twitter responds to Amy Schumer’s joke on Alec Baldwin’s shooting

Amy Schumer made an Oscars-banned joke on Alec Baldwin’s Rust movie shooting incident at her recent Las Vegas comedy appearance following the 94th Academy Awards.

Shortly after her joke went viral, some users took to Twitter to criticize Schumer for making light of the tragic circumstances of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ death.

Schumer was previously reprimanded for referring to Kirsten Dunst as a “seat filler” at the 2022 Academy Awards. However, she later claimed that the joke was “choreographed.”
