An Exhaustive Account Of Adnan Syed’s Family And Their Pursuit Of Justice

Adnan Syed

This is the first century of the 21st century in which Adnan Syed has been a free man. Adnan had been a prisoner ever since his arrest in 1999 for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Following the reversal of his conviction, Judge Melissa Phinn declared, “At this time, we shall release the shackles from Mr. Syed.”

When the police unshackled him, Syed rubbed his ankles in obvious disbelief. Outside the courthouse, Adnan was greeted by a crowd of cheering supporters as he made his way to an SUV.

Adnan’s mom, Shamim Syed, was one of the people who waited patiently outside. Her happiness was unshakeable; her family’s struggle had lasted 23 years, and it was now ended.

After Adnan’s Conviction, his Family fell Apart

The detention of Adnan shattered his family. Syed Rahman’s father became despondent and alone after the death of his wife and son, preferring to spend time alone reading Islamic texts rather than spending time with his grieving children and grandchildren.

Rahman didn’t believe in depression, according to what Shamim told The Guardian. Adnan’s younger brother Yusuf said, “He doesn’t believe in antidepressants.”

The podcast Serial, which brought worldwide attention to Adnan’s case, was listened to by Yusuf and Shamim, but Rahman was too weak to pay attention.

Shamim said, “We can even talk about the subject.” We’ve noticed that whenever he pulls out the photo album, he starts to cry. Rahman made a brief appearance on the HBO documentary series The Case Against Adnan Syed when he discussed the hardships his family had faced as a result of his wrongful conviction and imprisonment.

He insisted that Adnan Syed was innocent the entire time, therefore he wouldn’t go to court with the rest of the family. An attorney named Rabia Chaudry told Oxygen.com that Adnan’s innocence was never questioned by anyone who knew him.

Shamim revealed to the media outlet that she listens after dark. Later, she elaborated by saying

To listen, I have been laying down on this couch. Adnan Syed is the part of the conversation where the prison operator states “This is a Global-Tel connection prepaid call from…” and Adnan responds with his name. That’s just too cute.

Repeatedly, I play the song in my head. Yusuf added that he prefers to listen to podcasts in private so that he can focus on what he’s learning. He thought radio journalist Sarah Koenig had done more thorough research than the police:

She’s digging deeper than the police ever did. Having so little evidence makes me angry and dissatisfied.
Really? Are those your best options? My brother’s life was taken away from him for what? What, that was it?

Adnan’s older brother, Tanveer, left home and eventually settled in Philadelphia. The next day, Yusuf’s family was no more. “Imagine having a family one day and the next day you wake up and it’s utterly broken,” he said.

According to Yusuf, their homecoming of Tanveer after fifteen years away was a direct result of Serial’s influence on the family. Tanveer had forgotten everything, but when he heard my brother’s voice, Yusuf recalled, “it brought back all the memories.” He’s been here three or four times already!

The family’s dedication to doing right was anchored by Shamim, who served as a rock upon which everyone else might lean. According to Shamim’s comments in the HBO documentary, she felt like she was in prison alongside Adnan. She stated, “A major piece of us passed away.”

It’s not just him behind bars. I’m present as well.

Rahman was an unreliable member of the household. “He’s emotionally, just a shattered man,” Rabia Chaudry said of him. “He’s a shy guy who’s incredibly kind and lovely and gentle. Immediately following Adnan’s conviction, he went into seclusion.

Unfortunately for Yusuf and Shamim, the situation was exacerbated when the Muslim community in Baltimore banded together to support the Syed family. They said they couldn’t take the looks and whispers, so they stopped going out in public and gave an interview to The Baltimore Sun.

As the family sought revenge for Adnan, Shamim emerged as the rock upon whom the rest of the family could rely. “Adnan’s mother has become a sort of pillar of strength,” Chaudry remarked. While Serial was at its peak, Shamim and Yusef appeared on CBS This Morning to defend his character.

Yusuf remarked, “It was just yesterday.” The idea that I ever had a family is baffling to me now. Everything was taken from us. We’re just relieved the story has been shared with the world.

With the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to consider Adnan’s appeal in 2019, it seemed as if the Syed family had lost all hope. Erica Sutter, who represented Adnan Syed, would not give up; she and the prosecution looked into the trial of Adnan and discovered numerous irregularities on the part of the prosecution, such as the withholding of evidence.

After the hearing, Suter stated:

Adnan might have avoided missing his high school graduation, his pre-med aspirations, and his first 23 years of birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, community activities, and ordinary moments of delight if that proof had been made public.

A judge agreed with the prosecution and overturned Adnan’s conviction “in the interests of justice and fairness.” Adnan’s case will be retried or dismissed within the next 30 days.

After Judge Phinn released Adnan, both Shamim and Yusuf were overcome with emotion and began crying.

The family of Hae Min Lee blames the system for their loss

According to their lawyer, the family of Hae Min Lee did not receive adequate notice of Syed’s most recent hearing, thus they did not show up. In response to the lawyer’s plea for a delay, Judge Phinn denied the request.

She put the meeting on hold for half an hour so that Lee’s brother could participate through video chat. Young Lee spoke out against the proceedings, calling the whole thing a “nightmare.”

What he stated was: “It was important to me to be there in person. Twenty years have passed, and I’m still dealing with this. Every time I believe I’ve gotten through it, it returns the next day. This is driving me insane. I can’t even begin to describe how difficult it is.

Lee, his voice breaking, said he didn’t object to more investigations into the issue, but he did ask the court to take into account the impact on his family.

Lee expressed his sadness that his family had to go through the trauma of losing a loved one all over again due to the shortcomings of the legal system. The family of Lee does not believe justice will be done, according to their attorney Steve Kelly.

The words of Kelly went something like this: This will make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to bring anyone to justice. As a result, [Lee’s family] has given up hope that Hae will ever see justice. They had given up hope.

Kelly remarked that the victim of the crime, Hae, had been improperly written out of the story. That’s his narrative to tell, the author said.
Kelly chimed in, “He’s been turned into a hero by the media.

Kelly stated on behalf of the family, bemoaning their exclusion from the trial.

According to court documents, “the Lee family is profoundly dissatisfied that today’s hearing proceeded so fast and that they were denied the reasonable notice that would have given them to have a significant say in the proceedings.”
