American actor Clu Gulager, who was well-known, passed away on Friday, August 5, at the age of 93. The actor, whose best-known roles were in The Virginian and The Return of the Living Dead, was born William Martin Gulager on November 16, 1928, in Holdenville, Oklahoma.
He passed away from natural causes. On Facebook, Gulager’s daughter-in-law announced the news and stated that the 93-year-old actor passed away “surrounded by his beloved family.” In the same remark, she also added:
Clu was a proud Cherokee member, a rule-breaker, smart and intelligent, and always on the side of the oppressed. He was also polite and loyal to his trade. For nearly 70 years, Clu Gulager has performed as an actor. He began his career in television programs and soap operas in the 1950s, playing bit parts.
The actor went on to feature in two seasons of The Tall Man and four seasons of The Virginian, which all contributed to his rise to national prominence. He also had great success in 1971 with his role in The Last Picture Show.
The actor, however, won praise for his numerous roles in horror movies during the 1980s. He shared the screen alongside Vera Miles in the big-budget movie The Initiation from 1984.
He made major movie appearances in 1985, including The Return of the Living Dead and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.
A Day With the Boys, which was up for the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival, was directed by Clu Gulager in addition to enjoying great success as an actor.
The renowned actor, who had a 70-year career, also appeared in movies like Feast and Piranha 3DD which were directed by his son, John Gulager.
Interestingly, he worked with director Quentin Tarantino. Gulager revealed his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, saying the director wanted him specifically in the movie. Unexpectedly, it was the actor’s last cinematic role.
The actor said in a Tulsa World interview:
When given a screenplay and asked if I was interested, I responded,
“Sure, why not?” Although I no longer perform any acting, [Quentin Tarantino] wanted me to be in it. That was beautiful. He is a longtime friend of mine.”
Clu Gulager had previously been a regular patron of Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema.

John and Tom Gulager, Clu Mosha, his daughters-in-law Diane Goldner and Zoe Gulager, and Clu Gulager’s grandchildren all survive him. His wife, Miriam Byrd-Nethery, passed away in 2003.
