In terms of his working life, Andre first met Def Jam Recordings co-founder Russell Simmons in 1983. The same thing happened when he started working for Def Jam, where he quickly advanced to the post of vice president and general manager.
Similar to how Andre discovered Sean Puffy Combs and was credited with signing Sean “Puffy” Combs in 1988, he left Def Jam after a few years to start his label, “Uptown Records.”
In 1988, Harrell was given a record deal by MCA Music Entertainment Group. After a string of successful releases, MCA offered Harrell a multi-media deal that included film and television productions in 1992. They collaborated on the feature film Strictly Business and FOX’s hit police drama series New York Undercover, which aired from 1994 to 1998.
Uptown Records was rebranded Uptown Enterprises by Harrell, and music from the label was used in Universal Pictures and Universal Television productions. Harrell and Wendy Credle, a music lawyer, welcomed a son in 1994. Gianni Credle-Harrell was his name.
In 1995, Harrell was appointed President of Motown Records, serving in that capacity until 1997. He was the presenter of Champagne & Bubbles on Emmis Urban AC WRKS (98.7 Kiss FM) in New York on Sunday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.
Sadly, the 59-year-old founder of the renowned R&B and hip-hop label “Uptowns Records” passed away on May 8, 2020. The reason for his passing hasn’t yet been made public, though.
