Anthony Templet was chained to his controlling father, Burt Templet, for seventeen years. On the evening of June 3, 2019, Anthony shot Burt to death to release himself.

When the murder occurred, Teresa Thompson, Anthony Templet’s mother, had been estranged from her son for a while.
Teresa and her family reside in Texas, and she has reconciled with Anthony.
After Burt passed away, a genealogy specialist located Teresa and let her know Anthony was still alive. In the Netflix documentary, Teresa claimed that her son’s case’s circumstances made her joy at learning of his discovery lessened:
“I was simply overjoyed. I was shouting, “They found him,” while bouncing up and down. By the end of the chat, things weren’t all that joyful.

While he was in jail, Anthony and Teresa communicated for the first time in a long time. Teresa said to WAFB,
“We spoke on the phone for almost 15 minutes yesterday. It excelled. He is quite kind. We discussed activities from when he was younger.
Thankfully, the prosecution agreed with Anthony’s assertion that he believed no one could protect him from Burt’s relentless monitoring and assault and that the only way out was to kill Burt. Anthony was sentenced to five years on probation after entering a guilty plea to negligent murder.
After the sentence, Anthony’s lawyer, Jarrett Ambeau, told WAFB: “When I saw this injustice, I said, ‘Absolutely, no way should this kid be in jail.’ So, that is the result that we have. Although it might not be what we had hoped for, this system is flawed.
Anthony and Teresa got back together after Burt left. Currently, Teresa and her family including her grandchildren reside in Texas. Teresa agreed to give up custody of Anthony after Burt made repeated attempts to do so.
When Teresa and Burt first moved in together in Houston, Texas, their romance was enjoyable, according to Teresa’s account in I Just Killed My Dad. Burt insisted on constant attention and struck people severely for misbehaving. He once beat Teresa so severely that she had to spend a week in bed.
“I’m not sure why I stayed after that, still. From that point on, I think it was more out of dread,” stated Teresa. There was genuine worry that Burt would murder Anthony because the beatings continued even after Anthony was born. To avoid Burt killing her and her family, Teresa departed without Anthony.
She filed a custody lawsuit, but Burt failed to attend the court because he had left with Anthony for Baton Rouge. The courts granted Teresa custody of Anthony after she made a trip to Baton Rouge. She uttered:
“I genuinely believed that I would never run into Burt again, but I had forgotten what a terrible person he was. He is skilled at taking revenge.
Burt persisted and eventually won back custody through the Louisiana legal system. Teresa wanted to battle on, but she lacked the funds to launch another lawsuit. Anthony stated he wishes things had turned out differently but didn’t hold Teresa responsible for not challenging Burt.
When Teresa next spoke with Anthony, he was being held in jail while facing charges for the murder of his father.
