Anton Lesser grew up as an only child in Birmingham, raised by his architect father and housewife mother. Anton focused on his studies, as encouraged by his father, and attended Moseley Grammar School, where he preferred to read books and watch movies over participating in sports with his classmates.

He enrolled at the University of Liverpool in 1970 and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1974. During his second year there, he became interested in acting, and in 1975 he enrolled in the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he graduated in 1977 with a Master’s degree in drama and a Bancroft Gold Medal as the most promising actor of his year.

Lesser is a regular radio contributor who played the title character in Lindsey Davis’s first five Marcus Didius Falco mysteries for BBC Radio.
