An inquest will be conducted into Archie Battersbee’s death, which was the subject of a court battle between his parents and a hospital.
After Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee, Archie’s parents, lost in their attempt to have a High Court ruling that doctors could lawfully do this overturned, Archie’s life support was turned off on August 6, 2022.
Judges were instructed that Ms. Dance discovered Archie unconscious and with a ligature over his head at his Southend, Essex, home on April 7 of last year. He will be the focus of a two-day inquest in Chelmsford on Tuesday.
Archie was being treated by doctors at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London, who believed he was brain-stem dead and advised against prolonging life support.

Archie’s severe brain injury occurred after his parents exhausted all legal means to keep him in therapy, and on Saturday, August 6, the mechanical ventilator was turned off.
Archie Battersbee had no possibility of recovery, and the courts have repeatedly concluded that terminating the treatment would be in his best interests. To stop Barts Health NHS Trust from taking him off the ventilator at the Royal London Hospital, his parents, however, launched a lengthy media and legal campaign.
Archie was found at home in April 2022 with a ligature around his neck. He was then rushed to the hospital. His parents claim that he was taking part in a social media challenge.
His parents initially prevailed in the Court of Appeal in their argument that Mrs. Justice Arbuthnot, the High Court judge, should not have declared his brain stem dead without conducting a proper examination.
Causes of Archie Battersbee’s Brain Damage
Hollie Dance claims that taking part in an online challenge could have contributed to the man’s brain injury.
Lincoln Brookes, the senior coroner for Essex, indicated that he had not seen any evidence that Archie had taken part in any online blackout challenges during a preliminary inquest hearing in November of last year. He was however informed that the child’s phone included messages that indicated a highly low mood and that they had been found by the police.
On April 7, 2022, the complete inquest, according to him, would address Archie’s medical condition, mental state, and intents.
Threatening WhatsApp messages sent to her son, according to Ms. Dance, have allegedly been made public as part of the verification process before the inquest starts.
