It was December 9, 1982, when the crime Archie was falsely incarcerated—a 31-year-old woman was in her home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana when she was raped and stabbed in her chest and abdomen. In a line-up, Archie Williams was called numerous times as the woman became informed. At first, she could not recognize the attacker but shared that there was a person in one of the lineups that were very close to her attacker. Later, she picked up 22-year-old Archie in the line-up. After being—only around 70% positive, Archie’s alibi that he wasn’t at the scene of the crime, and the fingerprints found in the bedroom that didn’t belong to him, Archie was convicted.

On 21 April 1983, the jury found Archie guilty of “attempt murder, attempted rape, and aggravated assault.” And he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. While in prison, he realized that his only hope was “The Innocence Project,” and he kept writing to them for 11 long years. Finally, a re-examination of his case started in 1995 in New York and a motion for DNA testing was filed in 1996. Despite the denial of the plea, it was not until 2007 that the appellate court eventually ordered the tests to be carried out. The test results were not enough, however, and things went back to square one.

In 2014, a more efficient fingerprint comparison device called Next Generation Identification (NGI) arrived and the crime-scene fingerprints matched another man called Forbes. So, on March 21, 2019, all charges were dropped and Archie was released with a state apology.
