British businessman Jamal Edwards passed away on February 20 at the age of 31. The news was confirmed by his management to the PA news agency. He was most known for creating the music platform SBTV, which helped to popularize grime and launch several other artists.

The BBC confirmed his death with his agency before announcing it on Sunday night. The cause of death is yet unknown. Edwards is alleged to have played as a DJ in London on February 19 after attending the BRIT Awards on February 8.

On August 24, 1990, Jamal Edwards was born in Luton, England. Before relocating to Acton, West London, with his mother Brenda, stepfather Patrick, and younger sister Tanisha, he spent his formative years there.

Edwards’ mother urged him to pursue theatre and acting, but he preferred music and wanted to succeed there. He then transferred to Acton High School, where he struggled to get the grades required for college and eventually studied for an extra year.

Edwards received a BTEC Diploma in Media Moving Image from Ealing Green College. He began rapping and filming films with his friends during his time in school, which he then published on YouTube. SBTV first broadcast videos.

Before launching SBTV to support himself financially, he had spent four years working for the retailer Topman. Edwards launched SBTV as a YouTube channel and a youth broadcaster in 2006. He immediately built up a sizable fan base and was able to sign deals with well-known record labels.

Edwards received an MBE in 2014 for his contributions to music. He also served as an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, a youth initiative led by the Prince of Wales that supports budding entrepreneurs.
