Cormac McCarthy, a US author who won the Pulitzer Prize, passed away at the age of 89, according to his publisher. According to Penguin Random House, the author passed away on Tuesday at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from natural causes.
The Road and No Country for Old Men were two of McCarthy’s books that were adapted into popular movies.
His books frequently included bloody stories of the American frontier and post-apocalyptic settings. He was known to be a very private person in real life.
Stephen King, a fellow author, paid homage to him by calling him “possibly the greatest American novelist of my time.”
“He was full of years and produced a fine body of work, but I still mourn his passing,” he said in a tweet.
McCarthy was referred to be “one of the world’s most influential and renowned writers” by his UK publisher Pan Macmillan.
McCarthy’s 10th book, The Road, was released in 2006 and was awarded the coveted Pulitzer Prize for fiction the following year. It tells the story of a father and son’s difficult adventure as they try to survive in the US after the end of the world.
Joel and Ethan Coen adapted his 2005 novel No Country for Old Men, a somber tale of a drug trade gone bad in the remote Texas desert, for the big screen. Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones played the lead roles in this thriller, which was a big success.
Four Oscars were later won by the movie, including best picture. McCarthy was born into an Irish Catholic household in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1933. One of his six siblings.
However, he spent most of his youth in Knoxville, Tennessee, where his father practiced law. The Orchard Keeper, his debut book, was released in 1965.
The Passenger and Stella Maris, McCarthy’s most recent two works, were released towards the close of the previous year. He also created screenplays and short tales in addition to his books.
His media engagements or red-carpet stops over his lengthy career were uncommon.
Speaking to US talk show host Oprah Winfrey in 2007, McCarthy said, “I don’t think [interviews] are good for your mind.
The saying goes,
“If you spend a lot of time thinking about how to write a book, you probably shouldn’t be thinking about it, you probably should be doing it.”
