The publisher of best-selling crime writer Peter Robinson has announced his passing at the age of 72. The Yorkshire-based DCI Alan Banks book series made the novelist from Leeds famous.
With Stephen Tompkinson, the tales were turned into an ITV series that aired from 2011 to 2017.
His publisher confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday following a brief illness. Val McDermid and Ian Rankin, two other crime novelists, have paid tribute.
After completing his studies in English literature at the University of Leeds, Robinson immigrated to Canada in 1974.
Together with his wife Sheila Halladay, he resided in Toronto.
His DCI Banks books, the first of which was released in 1987, were faithful to his background because they were situated in the made-up Yorkshire town of Eastvale.
According to his UK publisher Hodder & Stoughton, the series has sold more than 8.75 million books.
After receiving their Derrick Murdoch Award in 2010, the Crime Writers of Canada gave him their Grand Master Award in 2020.

His family, friends, and the “many thousands of fans who will miss his work so dearly,” she wrote, were in her heart.
In particular, he spent a lot of time with his devoted wife Sheila, to whom he dedicated every book he authored.
Standing in The Shadows, his final book is scheduled for publication in March, and according to Ms. Mays, it “may be his strongest work yet.”
Author Val McDermid paid respects by tweeting: “Sad to hear about Inspector Banks’ passing.
Our paths frequently crossed (often accompanied by beer) in Canada and his native Yorkshire when we both had our first publications in 1987. Best wishes to Sheila

The Harrogate Crime Writing Festival’s organizers also praised a “great author and visitor.”
