Barbara a.k.a. “Babe” Cushing Mortimer Paley was an American socialite and fashionista whose second husband, William S. Paley, was the creator of CBS. For the majority of her life, she was known as “Babe.” In 1958, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Best Dressed List. Paley started working as a fashion editor for Vogue in New York City in 1938. Her job at Vogue provided her with access to expensive clothing, which was frequently supplied in exchange for Paley’s high-profile image. After Wallis Simpson and before Aimée de Heeren, she was chosen the world’s second finest dressed woman by Time magazine in 1941. In 1945 and 1946, she was also named to the best-dressed list.
Paley divorced her second husband in 1947.
