A video falsely claims that Babu Owino, a lawmaker for Embakasi East, was detained on Wednesday at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. In the Milimani Law Courts, Babu Owino was charged with subversion, provocative behavior, and another charge of inciting violence. Police detained Babu Owino once more on the same day that a Nairobi magistrate court discharged him. In connection with a previous assault accusation he committed while running for president of the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU), Babu was subsequently detained once more, according to the police. But on Wednesday morning, the MP announced on his Facebook page that he had been taken into custody.

Owino was accused of harassing journalists and sending threatening texts and phone calls in September 2021. According to various Kenyan media outlets, Owino was put behind bars in September 2017 for disparaging Kenyan President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.

Many influential Kenyan politicians demanded that he face severe legal repercussions for violating his right to free expression by making overtly derogatory remarks about the president. In Nairobi, he was detained and accused of spewing hate speech. Several Kenyans, including night guards, parking attendants, and other Kenyans, have been accused of being assaulted by Owino.

In several cases, the media ran footage of him accosting anyone who disagreed with him on any point viciously in public. In September 2017, Owino was detained and charged with assault and serious bodily harm to a voter.

Owino was detained in January 2018 on charges that he had assaulted a parking attendant in Nairobi’s Westlands and another member of his staff over an unpaid parking dispute. He refuted the allegations in spite of a video appearing to show an assault on the parking valet. Owino and MP Jaguar from the Starehe Constituency fought in parliament in November 2018 over divergent political ideologies.
