Balls Mahoney- Relationship, Married Life
Mahoney married Gayle Schechter in 2006, and they were married for a decade before his death. He died soon after his 44th birthday while watching “Jeopardy!” at home. When he arrived at the hospital, he was found unresponsive and declared dead.
An autopsy found that he died as a result of a heart attack. It was also determined that he had CTE, which is caused by repeated damage to the skull over time. The family launched a lawsuit against WWE in response to the reports, but the case was later dismissed.
He was boyhood friends with the late Chris Candido, and the two dreamed of working in professional wrestling together. They even dreamed of starting a wrestling promotion and trained together as kids.
Balls Mahoney- Professional Career
Balls grew up in Spring Lake Heights and had an interest in wrestling at a young age, enough so that he began training at the age of 15. He trained at the Monster Factory and made his debut under the alias Abbudah Singh in 1987. He worked for the World Wrestling Council for three years before taking a four-year hiatus before returning to the scene in Smokey Mountain Wrestling under the ring name Boo Bradley Jr.
Tammy Sytch was his manager throughout his stay there, and he was embroiled in a narrative in which he was abused by his management. It eventually boiled over when she killed his pet cat, and he changed his tune, becoming a popular favorite. He soon became buddies with Cactus Jack and began a long rivalry with his previous partner Chris Candido, who was managed by his former management. During his reign, he won the SMW Beat Champ Television Championship twice.
In 1995, he joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), where he first wrestled as a jobber under his original name of Rechner, until he lost the right to use his name in a match and was dubbed Xanta Klaus. As the year went by, he made fewer appearances.
Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW)
In 1997, he signed with ECW under the alias Balls Mahoney, launching his career. Fans of ECW who enjoyed brutal matches and violence appreciated his usage of the famous steel chair, which he used the majority of the time. He formed The Hardcore Chair Swingin’ Freaks with Axl Rotten. They tried and failed multiple times to win the Tag Team Championship.
He then teamed up with Masata Tanaka to win the World Tag Team Championship, his first championship reign as a tag team champion. They were defeated shortly after by Dudley Boyz. Later, he joined a tag team with Spike Dudley and won the championship again, this time for a few months until losing it to the Dudley Boyz. He also competed for the ECW World Television Championship against Rob Van Dam but lost. During his final year with the company, he frequently lost matches.
He was most effective while delivering punches or kicks, as the audience reacted with “Balls!” or “Nuts!” yells when he was hit.
Later in Life
After ECW, Balls spent the next five years wrestling for various independent promotions across the United States. He also had a brief appearance in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He returned to WWE, which had now owned ECW, in 2005, and appeared in the reunion program ECW One Night Stand. Mahoney was one of the initial signees of ECW, which was debuted as a new WWE brand a year later.
He was supposed to be part of a tag team, but once Axl Rotten walked out, he became more of a solo competitor. Mahoney only had a few bouts with Matt Striker, Snitsky, and Kevin Thorn after a few matchups. He also contended for the ECW Championship once but lost. He was terminated from his contract in 2008 after having an on-screen romance with Kelly Kelly. During the final eight years of his career, he primarily fought on the independent circuit, participating in World Wrestling Council and appearing on “TNA Impact!”
