The career of Basil Smikle

Basil worked as a special assistant to Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer from June 1996 through December 2000. He was Hillary Clinton’s deputy state director and senior employee during her first Senate campaign in 2001, and he remained on her Senate staff until 2003. In September 2003, he founded Basil Smikle Associates, through which he delivers his political system, public projects, and correspondence skills.

Basil has been a part-time professor at Columbia University since September 2006. He also works as an Adjunct Professor at the City University of New York, where he has been since September 2008. In February 2018, he was named a Distinguished Lecturer in Politics and Public Policy by the Murphy Institute. Since April 2015, Smikle has also served as the executive director of the New York State Democratic Committee. He is a frequent pundit on CNN and MSNBC.

Private life

In January 2000, Basil met the woman who would become his significant other, Marjorie Fields Harris. Marjorie is the Leader Chief of Reverend Al Sharpton’s social liberties organization, the Public Activity Organization. Basil was at the Organization for American Unity for a meeting with then-Congresswoman Hillary Rodham Clinton, as he was her senior guide at the time. Basil proposed to Marjorie in the spring of that year, and the couple married on May 26, 2001, at St George Episcopal Church in Manhattan. They became isolated after a number of years. He still lives in New York City and describes himself as a “Lifelong New Yorker.”
