Ben Simmons is not in custody, though. He participated in a holdout from the Philadelphia 76ers, his previous team. He received a fine and a suspension for “conduct detrimental to the team.”
The 76ers have maintained that Ben broke his contract by skipping practice and declining to participate in the preseason and regular seasons. Ben has explained that his limited engagement is due to his mental health.
When he requested a trade, the 27-year-old Australian-American player’s contract had four years and $147 million left on it.
Due to a right foot injury, he missed the whole 2016 NBA season after the 76ers drafted him first overall.
He was moved to the Brooklyn Nets during the 2020–21 season as a result of a holdout, making him the player with the highest fine in NBA history (more than $19 million).
In April 2022, Ben filed a grievance to contest the $20 million pay that the 76ers had withheld from him this season. The fight continues. The two parties reached a settlement, though.
