Who is Pernell Whitaker?

Born on January 2, 1964, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker was an American boxing great who competed from 1984 to 2001. He was well-regarded for his defensive skills and held titles in four different weight classes: lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight.

After six title defenses, Whitaker achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the undisputed lightweight champion. During his amateur career, he won gold in the 1984 Olympics and Pan American Games after taking home a silver medal in the 1982 World Championships.

Whitaker’s professional career was marked by victories, controversial decisions, and memorable bouts. In the early 1990s, he dominated the middleweight divisions as the unchallenged lightweight champion. Even though the 1993 “Fight” between Whitaker and Julio César Chávez ended in a majority draw, many believed Whitaker had prevailed.

Throughout his career, Whitaker won fights in some weight classes. In 1995, he achieved a historic first by being the fourth boxer to hold titles in four different weight classes. Whitaker’s reputation persisted even after controversial rulings like with the one against Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, which many believed Whitaker had won.

His incredible career came to an end in 2001 with his final fight, finishing 40-4-1. After retiring, Whitaker transitioned to training to impart his knowledge to the following generation. In 2006, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in recognition of his efforts.

Despite facing personal struggles outside of the ring, Pernell Whitaker continued to be active in his community and supported Norfolk’s reform initiatives. On July 14, 2019, Whitaker, 55, passed away in an automobile accident in Virginia Beach, leaving a lasting legacy in the boxing community.
