Bethany took an extended vacation in May 2003. She won both her group and the open categories at the Motion/Ezekiel Surf into Summer event in Hawaii.

Bethany finished second in the free women’s division in the National Scholastic Water Sports Association (NSSA) National Championships in San Clemente, California, the same year. Bethany was water skiing off Kauai’s North Shore on October 31, 2003, when she was attacked by a 14-foot requiem shark. The shark devoured her.

Because of the attack, she lost her left arm below the shoulder. Bethany began her path to recovery with an unbelievably cheerful attitude, despite losing more than 60% of her blood and undergoing extensive surgery without contracting an infection.
