Cale was the first driver to win three consecutive NASCAR Cup Series titles from 1976 to 1978, before Jimmie Johnson. Cale, a South Carolina native, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012. Cale Yarborough’s wife, Betty Jo, was married to the NASCAR racer for 62 years. Yarborough married Betty at the age of 22, which is a common age for having a family. Cale’s racing career began immediately after he married Betty. He married in 1961 and began racing full-time for Herman Beam two years later.
Cale previously stated that his wife was his most significant support system in an interview. Betty met the driver while working at a pharmacy in South Carolina. During a conversation, one of Cale’s friends suggested Betty, saying he had seen a beautiful lady working at a nearby pharmacy. Cale went to meet Betty and immediately fell in love with her.
Cale stated that Betty was always there for him in any scenario. Knowing that his family was always there for him meant a lot to the racer. Throughout the conversation, Cale compared his married life to that of his opponents. Cale stated that he knew some people who had to quit the industry because their husbands did not approve, but Betty was not one of them.
She loved seeing her husband win at the races. Betty was frequently spotted in victory lane cheering for Cale, something the NASCAR driver thought was significant. When asked how they spend their time away from racetracks, Cale stated that it was the only thing they had ever known. He also stated that Betty was not a fan of motorsports before meeting him, but he was able to convert her.

Cale told the Florence Morning News that he didn’t have to teach his wife about racing. He said that his wife was an accomplished driver before he met her. Betty was occasionally needed to drive pickup trucks while working at the drugstore. According to the racing legend, this was only one of the many reasons he fell for her.
Cale stated that his marriage encouraged him to be a better person both on and off the racetrack when asked what it meant to him. He desired to provide for the couple’s three children and assist them in leading better lives than he had. Tributes Flood In For NASCAR Legend
Since his death was revealed, the tributes to NASCAR legend Cale haven’t stopped. Jim France, Chairman and CEO of NASCAR, was among the first to pay tribute to Cale. “Cale Yarborough was one of the toughest competitors NASCAR has ever seen,” French said. Cale’s talent, toughness, and perseverance distinguish him from his competitors on the track and in the record books.”
Jimmie Johnson, who ended his three-year championship streak, acknowledged Cale on X (formerly Twitter). “Cale Yarborough was my childhood hero,” writes Johnson. What an honor to be tied for 83 Cup series triumphs with the legend.”
“He was ‘the man,’ and Cale Yarborough’s legacy will live on forever.” My sincere condolences to the Cale family.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr., Betty Jo’s spouse, also paid tribute to the sport’s legend. “A legend behind the wheel, for sure, but he had a personality, grit, and swagger that drew fans worldwide to him and NASCAR,” he added, holding up two photographs of them. By participating in the sport, he improved it.
“My thoughts are with his family.” Thousands of Cale’s fans have also taken to social media to pay tribute to the racer’s legacy and to offer their condolences to the Yarborough family.
