While recovering from severe burns, Big Jeff a well-known giggoer and artist has been hired to decorate a hospital window. Since August, Jeffrey “Big Jeff” Johns has worked at Southmead Hospital.
After a fire started in his home in June, he was originally treated at a specialized burns facility in Swansea.
Because he was asked to “practice reaching out and up,” according to Mr. Johns, the painting has served as both therapy and physiotherapy.
He told BBC West that the experience “made me reach out in all directions while exercising my intellect.”
Mr. Johns, who is well-known for going to countless concerts each year in Bristol, is also an accomplished painter whose works have been displayed at several locations throughout the city, including The Island.
His “extreme delight” at being able to paint once more was expressed.
My resolve to hold a pen or brush in my left hand, he remarked, is one of the things that has saved me.
“Having an expressive outlet certainly helps when I’m feeling down about my left hand or beating myself up over my body.”
Life-altering Modifications
Following an apartment fire in June, Mr. Johns is still making a full recovery. To lessen the long-term impact of his burns, he had several surgeries and procedures.
I’m still worried about upcoming surgeries, he admitted.
“I’ve got to make drastic adjustments because I can’t take care of some things on my own.
“I’m hoping to get some help and return home in the next month or so.”
Friends have recently taken Mr. Johns to see sound checks at concerts, which has improved his mood.
At my first soundcheck, I cried,” he admitted.
“It was incredibly energizing and hypnotic.
“My friends came over and took me to the sound check because I was feeling very depressed. The noise made all of my worries and stress vanish.”
