Big Pokey, a US rapper, passed away after collapsing during a Texas concert. The performer, whose real name was Milton Powell, stumbled backward on stage at a Juneteenth-themed event at a pub on Saturday.
Before the 45-year-old was transferred to a local hospital, witnesses sprung into action to assist him. It happened on Sunday.
His publicist said in a statement that “he was dearly loved by his family, his friends, and his devoted fans.”
The statement continued,
“Big Pokey will forever be ‘The Hardest Pit In The Litter!'”, a reference to the rapper’s debut record.
During a performance at Beaumont’s Pour09 Bar, Powell was caught on camera falling backward while holding his microphone.
According to a Beaumont Police official who talked to the Houston Chronicle, paramedics were summoned just before midnight local time. It is unknown what caused the death.
Powell is most recognized for being a founding member of the iconic Houston-based hip-hop group Screwed Up Click.
Lowering the pitch and speed of the underlying recording, helped create the “chopped-and-screwed” sound, which is a relaxed, low-slung sound that is characteristic of the city.
When Powell performed the Paul Wall tune Sittin Sidewayz in 2005, the song reached the Billboard Hot 100 list. Additionally, he appeared on Megan Thee Stallion’s Southside Royalty Freestyle the previous year.
Juice J, Slim Thug, and Lil Flip are just a few of the musicians that have paid respect to Powell.
“He was a quiet, modest mountain of a man who carried himself with honor and respect. Bun B, a rapper, commented on Instagram, “He was easy to love and hard to despise.
