Screenplays for the independent films Strange Behavior (1981), an homage to 1950s pulp horror movies, and Strange Invaders (1983), featuring Nancy Allen and Wallace Shawn, marked the beginning of his film career.

It featured real-world encounters with aliens who had been living in Illinois since 1958 as a result of a covert agreement they had made with the Eisenhower government.

His directorial debut was the chilling Southern Gothic mystery Sister, Sister (1987), featuring Eric Stoltz and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Even though the movie underwent major changes after test screenings, it was still a critical failure that hindered Condon’s career.

A few years later, Condon gained notoriety for his made-for-TV thrillers, such as Murder 101 (1991), which starred Pierce Brosnan and won an Edgar Award in 1992 for the script that it contained. He also wrote the screenplay for the Australian thriller F/X2 directed by Richard Franklin during this period. (1991).

In 1994, he was the director of the Roger Moore and Nancy Allen-starring television movie The Man Who Wouldn’t Die. Despite mixed reviews, Bill Condon decided to broadcast it during sweeps week.

He directed the 1995 follow-up to Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror movie Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh. It was a critical financial failure. Condon said, “It’s difficult to be lower on the totem pole than being the director of a sequel to a horror movie,” when asked about this time in his career years later.

Condon co-wrote and directed the movie Gods and Monsters. (1998). He used Christopher Bram’s book as the basis for his script.

His script was a finalist for the Best Adapted script Oscar. Condon “may have been the most shocked person at the Academy Awards when his name was announced as the winner for the best-adapted screenplay,” according to the New York Times.

He has toiled in Hollywood for years as a scriptwriter and journalist, so the attention that is now on him is foreign to him. For the script he wrote for Chicago, he also received a second Edgar Award.
