Bill O’Brien and Colleen’s long-lasting love story began in 1998 when they exchanged vows. Their bond has grown stronger as they have shared experiences for over 25 years. Their family is pleasantly enhanced with the arrival of two children, Jack and Michael. Jack, the oldest brother, was born around 2007, therefore he is currently in his thirties.
On the other hand, Michael, the younger of the two, was born on May 5, 2005, and is now in his late teens. The chance encounter that set the stage for their love story occurred in the early 1990s. Bill, then a graduate assistant coach for the Georgia Tech football team, met Colleen at an Atlanta sports bar celebration.
The atmosphere was upbeat after Georgia Tech’s shocking overtime victory over North Carolina. Bill fondly remembers the moment, describing it as love at first sight. Mutual friends, particularly tight ends coach Doug Marrone, helped coordinate their meeting.
Colleen, who was there as a guest of Marrone’s then-girlfriend and college roommate Helen Donnelly, ended up in the middle of a football celebration. Bill’s family, noticing the spark between the two, expressed their approbation. As Bill recalls:
“My parents and brother were also present.” They met [Colleen] first. And they were the ones that warned, ‘You’d better not screw this up.
Colleen recalls her first impressions of Bill, remembering his sense of humor despite the distraction of many football games playing in the background.
“There were so many football games on that he was busier watching the games than talking to me,” she stated with a grin on her face. “But one thing I noticed about him was his sense of humor. “He’s very funny and very himself.”
Their journey from that sports bar meeting to a quarter-century of shared delights and difficulties demonstrates the enduring power of love and laughter in their lives.
