Career
After enrolling at UCLA, Sigi Schmid started his professional soccer career in 1972. He served as the Bruins’ starting midfielder from 1965 until 1975. For the first two seasons after his arrival, the UCLA Bruins were successful in securing the runner-up position.
Later in 1975, during his senior year, he was selected for the All-Far-West team. He concluded his UCLA career with the 11th-most assists ever.
He started working as a coach at Bishop Montgomery High School in 1975, and he later helped form the South Bay Vikings. Sigi supported Steve Gay as an assistant coach at UCLA from 1977 to 1979.
Sigi was appointed head coach when Gay left in 1980. He was selected Coach of the Year by Soccer America magazine in 1984. He led UCLA as its head coach from 1989 to 1999.
After that, he was appointed head coach of the Major League Soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy in 1999, a post he kept until 2004. With the Los Angeles Galaxy, he ended his career with a 79-53-32 overall record and a 16-7-3 postseason record.
He was appointed the first coach of Seattle Sounders FC in 2009. He also quit the team in 2016 when assistant coach Brian took over and later became a studio commentator for ESPN.
