Bob Kersee’s wife, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, helped him realize his true self. In the 1984 Heptathlon in Los Angeles, Joyner took home silver. She came in five points behind Glynis Nunn despite being the pre-race favorite. She came in fifth position in the long jump.
In the heptathlon at the 1986 Goodwill Games, Joyner earned over 7,000 points. In 1986, she was ranked as the best amateur competitor in the US. She later participated in Seoul, South Korea. Bob earned gold in the long jump and heptathlon.
