With his directorial debut film, the black comedy Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), Bong first became known to audiences and gained a cult following, before going on to have critical and commercial success with his subsequent films, including the crime thriller Memories of Murder (2003), the monster film The Host (2006), the science fiction action film Snowpiercer (2013), and the Academy Award-winning black comedy Black Swan (2013).

Two of his films, Okja in 2017 and Parasite in 2019, appeared in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, with the latter winning the Palme d’Or, a first for a South Korean film. Parasite was also the first South Korean film to be nominated for an Academy Award, with Bong winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, making it the first non-English film to win Best Picture. Bong was named to Metacritic’s list of the 25 finest film directors of the twenty-first century in 2017. He was also named to Time’s 100 Most Influential People and Bloomberg’s 50 Most Influential People lists in 2020.
