How did Kirstin Maldonado start her Professional Career?
When Kirstin and her band, Pentatonix, won The Sing-Off in November 2011, her career took off. Members of the trio comprised beatboxer Kevin Olusola, bassist Avi Kaplan, and musician Mitch Grassi.
Sony Music signed the band after the major win, and they were also given $200,000. The trio subsequently moved to Los Angeles and released cover songs over the course of the following six months.
Three songs went viral: “Gangnam Style” by PSY, “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye, and “We Are Young” by Fun.
But Epic Records, the band’s record company, dropped them.
The group launched its YouTube channel after the setback, and it quickly gained millions of subscribers. They continued to work on their albums and on YouTube.
In June 2012, they issued their first albums, PTX, Vols. A few months later, the group released PTXmas, their holiday EP. The following November, they released their second EP, PTX, Vols.
However, Vol. 3 of PTX was not released by Pentatonix for another two years. That’s Christmas to Me, their second full-length Christmas album, was released in October 2014.
Despite the band’s success, bassist Avi Kaplan was forced to depart Pentatonix in April 2017 due to his inability to balance tour dates with family obligations. The next year in October, Matt Sallee took his position, and the group released their sixth album, PTX Presents Top Pop, Vol. I.
On the other hand, Kirstin began a solo career. She made her debut EP, L O V E, in July of 2017 and released her first single, Break a Little, in January.
